Teaching aids : the computer , the blackboard and some chalk .
Teaching procedures :
Step 1: Greeting
Greet the class as usual
Step 2 lead-in.
Show some pictures about the traffic accidents on the screen , have students discuss them .
Every day we go to school and come back home by bus, by bike or on foot. We should know how to protect ourselves form the road accidents. Today we will learn a passage which tells us something about the traffic accidents and road safety.
Step 3 Reading comprehension
Now we are going to read an article entitled Traffic Accidents and Road Safety. From the title, what information do you think the reading passage will give us? (It will mainly talk about two things: the causes of traffic accidents and how to be safe on the road.)
Fast reading
Have students read the notice as quick as possible and find out the answers to the following questions .
1 Why was the notice release ?
(Because the number of accidents and the deaths arising from traffic accidents has
increased greatly over the past year.)
2 What is the notice aimed at ?
(The notice is aimed at increasing people`s awareness of the traffic problem.)
Carefully reading
Now read the article carefully and find answers to these questions:
1. What are some of the causes of traffic accidents involving vehicles?
2. What is the most common cause of accidents?
3. Why must drivers be forbidden to use the mobile phones while driving?
4. How do accidents involving bicycles happen?
5. What things should all pedestrians do?
Answers
1. Traffic accidents involving vehicles are mainly caused by drivers who make incorrect actions, such as not paying attention while driving, being impatient in a traffic jam, speaking on a mobile phone while driving, drinking alcohol, speeding and so on.
2. Drivers not paying attention is the most common cause of accidents.
3. Because the drivers who are speaking on the phone are often not concentrating.
4. Accidents involving bicycles are usually caused because cyclists are not paying attention to the cars around them, or carrying a passenger. Sometimes accidents occur with bicycles when the brakes on their bicycles do not work properly or their bicycles do not use lights at night.
5. Pedestrians should always cross roads on a crossing. While crossing, they should look both ways and listen for cars.
Step 4: Discussion
First, let’s discuss the following questions:
1. If you are a driver, what should you do to prevent accidents?
Pay attention to the surrounding traffic
Be patient in a traffic jam
Not speak on a mobile phone
Not drink alcohol
Not drive too fast
2. What cyclists should do in order to prevent accidents?
Always obey the rules
Pay attention to the cars that surround them
Not carry a passenger
Have a light on the bicycle at night
Keep the bicycle in good condition
3. What should pedestrians do so as to prevent accidents?
Always cross roads on a crossing
Look both ways and listen for cars while crossing the street
Never ignore traffic lights
Discuss them in your groups and write your group answers down, then report them to the class.
Step 5 summary
In this class we read the notice released by police ,and know some causes of traffic accidents as well as road safety . In our daily life we should help people increase the awareness of protecting traffic accidents ,and know how to protect ourselves from the danger on the roads .Treasure life , safety first !
Step 6: Homework:
1. Finish D1 and D2 on page 129 of the workbook.
2. Read the newspaper article in Part B on page 131 of the Workbook to know about an aeroplane accident many years ago.
