They are the Square Memorial Pavilion (四牌樓), the Memorial Hall to Zheng Banqiao (鄭板橋紀念館), the Former Residence of Zheng Banqiao (鄭板橋故居), the Former Residence of Liu Xizai (劉熙載故居), Shangfang Temple (上方寺), the Tomb of Shi Nai’an (施耐庵墓)…

T: Good. And who can tell us how to get to these places?

S: We can get to … by car / bus / train / bike (bicycle). [But on foot.]

T: Very good. Now, look at the picture on the screen.

T: The old gentleman is in a wheelchair. Can you guess the meaning of ‘wheelchair’?

Ss: Yes, it means ‘輪椅’ in Chinese.

T: Good. Now, tell me if you’re in a wheelchair, would you be able to get to those places of interest?

(Show the following on the screen.)

    Ask your partner:

    1. what Sun Yao and the tourist are talking about.

    2. why the tourist travels in a wheelchair.

    3. what the weather is like today.

    3. It’s a bit windy.

    4. The Summer Palace.

    5. No, he seldom has any difficulties.

T: Good. Your answers are all correct. But when you are reading the dialogue, you may find some difficult points. Now, look at the screen. I’ll explain them to you. Listen carefully and take some notes if necessary.

    Language points:

    1. Hopefully tomorrow will turn out fine.

= It is hoped that it will become fine tomorrow. e.g.

    Hopefully it won’t rain.

    Hopefully we’ll win.

Hopefully our guests will be here by 9:30.

    2. turn out – to prove to be (in the result), to happen to be in the end e.g.

The mid-term examination turned out (to be) easy.

It turned out (to be) a fine day.

It turned out that the message sent to him was not correct.

    3. dream vt. vi. n.

    (1) vt. e.g.

I dreamed a terrible dream last night.

I dreamed that I was in a forest.

    (2) vi. dream of (doing) sth. e.g.

She has been dreaming of becoming a film star.

I never dream of success like this.

    (3) n.

    My dream has come true.

I had a terrible dream last night.

    4. come true – to be real, to happen e.g.

His ideas which seemed so strange in those days have come true.

    5. manage vt. & vi. to be able to do sth. difficult

    (1) vi. e.g.

    - Can I carry the box for you?

    (2) vt. e.g.

He managed to escape from the fire.

The room was very dirty, but he managed to clean it.

He managed to escape from the fire.

= He tried to escape from the fire, and finally succeeded.

    6. as + adj. / adv. + as possible (= as … as one can) e.g.

You should finish your homework as early as possible.

    7. even though = even if e.g.

We like English very much, even though it is rather difficult for us.

We have determined to visit the place of interest even if / though it rains tomorrow.

T: You should pay attention to the word ‘manage’. It can be used as a transitive verb as well as an intransitive verb. When it is used transitively, it can be followed by an infinitive. You should pay more attention to the difference between ‘manage to do sth.’ and ‘try to do sth.’. The expression ‘try to do sth.’ means that the doer (the subject) just tried, but we don’t know if he / she succeeded or not in the end. But if you use ‘manage to do sth.’, that means the subject tried and succeeded in the end. Are you clear?

    Ss: Yes.

T: OK. That’s all for the language points in the dialogue. In this dialogue, there are some very important words and phrases that you have to pay attention to. Now, let’s do an exercise about them. Look at the screen, please. After you finish, you can discuss in pairs.

    Ex. 2 on Page 108.

    Suggested answers:

    1. turn out 2. tourist / visitor; round 3. dreamt / dreamed of; come true 4. Hopefully 5. manage 6. by 7. determined; even though 8. as far as

    Step 4. Practice

T: Good. Besides these words and phrases, there’re some important everyday English in the dialogue. You must practise them a lot so that you can use them freely.

T: Now, just imagine you meet a foreign tourist outside a hotel in our town. Have a similar dialogue with your partner. (The students practise for a while and then the teacher asks two pairs to act out their dialogues.)

    Suggested answers:

    A: It’s cloudy today, isn’t it?

B: Yes, it is. I hope tomorrow will turn out fine.

A: Are you a tourist here?

B: That’s right. I’m traveling to the East Lake tomorrow.

A: Are you? Is it difficult for you to travel around in a wheelchair?

B: I seldom have any difficulties. Well, can you tell me something about the East Lake?
