    When were you born? Where were you born?

    I was born in 1986. I was born in France.

    We lived there for about nine years.

    (To revise the irregular forms of past tense verbs)

    Step 1 Presentation

    Draw a time line across the Blackboard and mark it like this:

    1987 England 1996 France 1999 China Now

    Say these sentences, pointing to the correct places on the time line: Let me tell you about Ann. She lives in China now. In 1997 she lived in France. In 1988 she lived in England. Repeat, and then get the students to listen and repeat. Teach move by saying “In 1996, Ann moved to France. In 1999, she moved to China.” Get the students to listen and repeat. Ask “Where did Ann move to in 1996 / 1999?”Finally, say “She was born in 1987.” Get the students to guess the meaning of was born and to practice the sentence. Ask random questions about Ann: When was Ann born? Where did she move to in 1996? Where does she live now? Where did she live eight years ago? etc.

    Step 2 Read and act

    SB Page 43, Part 1, Speech Cassette Lesson 35. Books closed! Tell the students Listen to Ann and Mr. Mott. When was Ann born? When did she move to France? Play the tape for the students to find the answers (1987, 1996). Books open! Play the tape again. Students listen and repeat. Get the students to guess the meaning of May, understand and most. Point out that found is the past form of find. Then the students practice the dialogue in pairs. Choose one or two pairs to perform the dialogue. Do workbook Lesson 35, Ex. 1.

    Step 3 Ask and answer

    SB Page 43, Part 2. Ask why did Ann's family move to France / China? Help the students to answer, using “because”. Then the students ask and answer the questions in pairs. Check the answers with the whole class.

    Note: Because my father found work there is not a complete sentence in itself. Rather, it is only an adverbial clause of the complete sentence. We moved because my father found work there. However, in conversation, complete sentences aren't always used, especially when using a complete sentence is redundant.

    Step 4 Listening

    Workbook Lesson 35, Ex. 3, Listening Cassette Lesson 35. Read through the sentences in Ex. 3 with the students. Give them a few minutes to guess what goes in the blanks. Play the tape at least two times. Students fill in the blanks. In pairs, have the students compare their guesses with what they heard. With the whole class check the answers.

    Listening text

    1 Lucy and Lily like going shopping when they are free.

    2 Yesterday afternoon, they didn't have any classes.

    3 It was a sunny day. So they wanted to go shopping.

    4 This time, they went by bus to a big bookstore.

    5 There were many people and all kinds of books there.

    6 They found a very interesting storybook with beautiful pictures in it.

    7 The book was easy to understand, so they bought it.

    After listening, the students should try to put the sentences together to make a passage. Then have them tell the story.

    Step 5 Workbook

    Workbook Lesson 35, Ex. 2 and 3. Ex. 2 should be done in groups. Then ask several groups to report to the class. Ex. 3 is a listening exercise.

    Homework

    Revise the listening text from Workbook Lesson 35, Ex.3. Finish off the workbook exercises. Remember the new words and phrases.
